Refereeing can be an incredibly rewarding and fulfilling experience. Not only do referees play an important role in maintaining the integrity of the game, but they also gain a variety of benefits from their involvement in the sport. From staying active and healthy, learning the rules of the game, developing leadership and decision-making skills, making a positive impact, connecting with others, travelling and seeing new places, learning from experienced referees, getting paid for doing something you love, improving communication skills, and giving back to the community. All referees in Canada would start with their club and could progress all the way through the game.
The transition from playing to refereeing is easier than you think. Refereeing is a great opportunity to see the game from a different angle. Your understanding of the game will help you to know where to be on the field to have the best view and your experience playing the game will be a great help in foul recognition. If you want to invest in yourself, refereeing is full of growth opportunities.
Ontario Soccer is offering Entry Level and Small Sided referee courses in the months leading up to the outdoor summer season.
The Entry Level Referee Course is for those who are 14 years of age (by March 31st of the current year) or older and would like to become an accredited match official.
The Small Sided Game Referee Course is for those who are 12 or 13 years of age (by March 31st of the current year) and would like to become an accredited referee on 7v7 games only.
